The birthplace of the New World, next door to one of the world’s best universities, it’s no wonder Boston is nicknamed the Athens of America. An epicenter of achievement, bright ideas and research institutions, the East Coast powerhouse has the right stuff to make things happen. But to put the wheels in motion, Bostonians need the right kind of workspace to get game-changing products to market. Something aspirational. High-tech, agile. Flexible, even…
The future is flexible
Home to a whopping 3.7 million square feet of flexspace, Boston is officially the fourth-largest flexible working market in America (topped only by Manhattan, Los Angeles and Chicago). Coworking or flexspace now makes up 1.7% of the region’s office market – that might not sound a lot, but there’s a heck of a lot of corporate real estate in Boston. And, when you consider there was virtually zero flexspace in the city 10 years ago, reaching the 3.7 million square-foot marker ain’t too shabby.
Boston’s prospering coworking scene is propped by the city’s healthy startup ecosystem. Last year, the city actually beat New York in terms of overall startup investments, and it’s birthed its fair share of unicorns (companies valued at more than $1 billion) too – ones to watch include Starry, Toast, Ginkgo Bioworks and DataRobot. All manner of industries are investing in Boston’s talent pool, with biotech, pharmaceuticals, data science, and food tech just some of the sectors that are dominating the local startup scene.
Startups value the inspiring environments of coworking office space. Design-centric workspace that’s conducive to creativity and collaboration is what they’re after (not depressing, beige-carpeted office floors where everybody hides away in their nook). And, given the unpredictability for fledgling businesses in their early years, shared office space leased on more flexible terms lets them upscale or downsize the amount of workspace they’re using (rather than getting locked into a 10-year lease in a conventional office space with no wriggle room).
Boston, more Spaces are on its way
We’re becoming a pretty big deal in Boston already, thanks to Spaces Newbury Street in the city’s happening Back Bay neighbourhood. But, with the coworking boom in full swing, it was time to add another awesome place to work – this time in the sparkling financial district at the top of a skyscraper.
Launching this month, Spaces State Street offers downtown designer workspace – a combo of private offices, meeting rooms and collaborative lounge areas. The Wi-Fi is super-fast (naturally), the public transport links are second to none, and the rooftop deck is undoubtedly going to be a breeding ground of breakthroughs and “eureka” moments. Next time you’re in town, why not stop by with your laptop and soak up the brainy Boston vibe?
