If you were trying to picture a perfect opening event of a new Spaces in Southern-California, what would it look like? If the answer is: a DJ spinning groovy beats, stunning Mexican food served up by a celebrity chef, locally brewed craft beers and even a barber to keep those stylish beards in shape – you’d be exactly right.
All of these things and more were on offer when hundreds of people turned out for the grand opening of Makers Quarter, the latest Spaces hub to open its doors in the stunning Californian city of San Diego.
The occasion was marked with incredible cuisine cooked up by none other than Ruffo Ibarra, a celebrity chef from Tijuana just over the border in Mexico, and a local craft beer restaurant called 10 Barrel Brewing also donated some of its finest libations to help wash everything down.
Pop-up barbers and live art-making
As well as incredible food and craft ales, there was also art and music, all combining to produce what was one truly unforgettable opening event attended by almost 300 people. “We had a live local artist who painted a beautiful art piece for us during the event; we also had a local art instalment where amazing art pieces were hung throughout our office too,” says area manager Krista Hoggard.
To make sure everyone looked their best at the party, guests even had the chance to have a haircut and a shave too if they wanted, with the building’s neighbors Tailored Hair on hand with a pop-up tidy-up of shaves and trims. Music was provided by celebrity mix-master DJ Ramsey, with the ribbon being cut by special guest Assemblyman Todd Gloria.
More than just an office space
It all reinforced the idea that the new site is more than just another office space in San Diego – it’s part of a complete creative community of local businesses, with the local neighborhood association even helping to spread the word among residents. “All of the art, live artists, and DJ were local, the beer was donated from the restaurant next door,” Hoggard adds.
Makers Quarter is a brand-new development at the heart of San Diego’s East Village. The largest urban area in downtown San Diego, it comes with an industrial past but has undergone a major transformation in recent years, playing host to urban renewal programs which include retail, leisure and residential developments. It’s known for its art and creative startups, which has led to huge demand for coworking in San Diego.
Al fresco work environment
This mixed-use Makers Quarter campus provides the perfect office space for rent in San Diego and is home to a whole host of residential and commercial buildings, with bars, bakeries, cafés and galleries all in the mix. “The location is ideal as it is in a new development that is up and coming,” says Hoggard. “The building itself has 12 total garage doors within our space. They bring the outside in to create an al fresco work environment to take advantage of California’s amazing weather.”
The building encapsulates everything Spaces is known for, with offices, coworking lounges and conference rooms providing a flexible solution for both startups and established businesses. Commuting is a cinch, with San Diego Trolley’s Park & Market station just a block away, and the site is well served by buses and taxis.
Speaking to The San Diego Union-Tribune about the event, Spaces Executive Vice President Jim Doorn spoke of his excitement at opening the new site in San Diego. “We try to find unique spaces for our brand. (Block D) is one of the most sustainable projects in the country. The building has these really cool garage doors that bring the great San Diego climate into the space.”
Makers Quarter is just the latest to open in San Diego, a city which already hosts Spaces locations at Kettner Commons and University Town Centre.
