It’s no secret that the worldwide number of office spaces, coworking spaces and creative offices has soared in the last ten years. But what determines whether an office will be a place of success and fortune, or a place of frustration and failure?
Reshape, replace, repeat.
An office as simply a room that allows you to do some work is by far an outdated concept. It’s proven by the rapid pace in which large multinationals, but also small startups, are going all out to reshape the concept of what an office should be. They all do it. Jam-pack it with high-end technology, insert indoor gardens, cram it with creative areas full of lazyboys and of course the office gym (or even the office that IS a gym). The options are virtually limitless. But are these things – although very nice – really the solution for ending productivity drops, writer blocks, and to skyrocket creativity?
Office wellness is where it’s at.
Office wellness is an intangible goal that is often unknowingly the key factor in having a happy squad of crisp and sharp employees. If your employees aren’t feeling well, then odds are they won’t act on the level your company strives to act upon. And office wellness doesn’t just include the physical well-being of employees, the psychological well-being matters just as much (if not more). Does a gym fix this? Possibly part of it, but multiple other factors weigh in as well. It can be anything ranging from comfortable desks, the amount of windows and sunlight pouring through, and a good climate system.
The perfect fit.
Getting your office wellness to a higher level calls for a dedicated plan for all types of employees. It’s good to realise that not all types of jobs require a similar office plan. An employee that deals with financials and personal data has a stronger need for a closed-off environment. An employee that wings it everyday needs a high level of freedom. And all employees need to have some access to a quiet area where they can focus if they have the need to. Going to work everyday, knowing you’re going to have trouble concentrating can be very bad for general motivation and office culture. It can cause and expose underlying frustrations and problems between employees, creating a bad office culture.
Cleanup in aisle three.
A smart way to get employees happier, is to create breathing room. Incorporate wide aisles in between desks, include open areas to make people feel relaxed and avoid the feeling of being cooped up all day, and add plants to your office. It’s surprising how much difference a larger, greener room makes, as it actually allows for more oxygen in a room, and it also makes taking quick productivity runs easier. A shortage of fresh oxygen can cause fatigue, productivity drops and won’t affect your mood in a good way, so it’s needless to say why this benefits an office’s general state of well-being.
Office wellness and success go hand-in-hand as it’s a sure-fire way to boost morale and the employees’ output. You don’t need an indoor forest, treadmills under your desk, or 60-inch tv-screens mounted to every square inch of wall. You need the perfect balance.
