Known to many as The City of Steel, or maybe the home of the globe’s favourite game, Football. There’s a lot more to Sheffield than meets the eye. Whether it’s the Yorkshire blessing or the refined patriarchy that the people proudly boast, there’s an undeniable feeling of home and comfort within the city.
The only way is up
A city of seven hills, Sheffield isn’t for the faint hearted (or the lazy). Built on hill after hill, you’ve got a gruelling walk up from the train station to anywhere that takes your fancy. But the task is taken out of it when you find yourself walking around one of the greenest cities in the UK. It would be fair to say that Sheffield has a plentiful supply of greenery, with around 4 trees to every person. Then of course you’ve got the Botanical Gardens and the Winter Gardens to get your daily dose of nature, not to mention The Peak District on your doorstep. A national park that makes other cities green wth envy.
A city of Pride
You can take a person out of Sheffield, but you can’t take Sheffield out of a person. Nearly everyone from Steel City is ‘rate’ (really) proud of their heritage. It might be something to do with the fact the city is home to a vast array of musical talent; The Arctic Monkeys, Jarvis Cocker, Reverend and The Makers & Pulp. There’s a whole host of ace music venues to attend – whatever your taste in music might be. It could however have something to with the sporting legends we’ve raised; Jessica Ennis, Harry Maguire and Jamie Vardy.
Indie-pendence
Since the industrial revolution, Sheffield has been home to a lot of business, and it’s nice to see that in recent years, it’s been a magnet to independent retailers and companies. Street food fills the streets whilst an eclectic mix of bars can be scouted out if you’re prepared to do your research. Loaded with local breweries and coffee roasters that brew in the city walls, keeping things close to the Sheffield way is at the forefront of many minds. A stroll along Division Street or maybe extend your journey a little further and head down to Kelham Island, you’ll see the city thrive off of cool clothes stores, barbers and bars.
So what’s not to love ‘our kid’? Stretch your legs (and that’s a given with all the hills) and see for yourself.
